Tourmalines from Isola Elba, Italy

Isola Elba is a very well known location since it is linked to the elbaite, the tourmaline first identified on the pegmatite rocks of this island. A lot of marvelous specimens have been digged from these quarries, at present none of them is active but ... working on old pegmatite vugs or among the granite rocks some nice specimens may be found. The selection of specimens that you can see here are the best among the several I have choose for this special web site dedicated to pegmatites minerals from Elba. Most of them have been found in the dumps or in some pockets opened in these last years. There are also some nice specimens from old collections !

San Piero at 6:00 a.m. The famous Fonte del Prete, Filone della Speranza pockets were located close to the San Piero village. This is the view of the Grotta d'Oggi quarry, probably the most famous location for elbaites. The quarry is located among trees and bushes, where you can see the white granite emerging from the green of the vegetation.

This is the view of the area of Masso Foresi (on the left) and Fonte del Prete (on the right). These two locations are just below the houses of San Piero, and the only rocks you can work on are those on the dumps. No new pegmatite have been worked here.
